How Drinking Horns are Made
- Horns have two sections – the core and the outer horn. The thickness of the horn section that’s left when the core is removed varies, making each horn unique. The horn and core are separated, cleaned, and polished to specification. Some horns demand a high polish and smooth look, while others have a more natural look. After polishing and forming, the horns are then sealed and finished, and (optionally) engraved before being used.

Great product… kind of small for a Viking
The product that arrived was incredible well crafted and gorgeous, any imperfections were natural and it holds hot liquids very well. I can’t speak enough for the craftsmanship.The reason for the 4-star rating is direct and simple: It lost one star for size. I ordered the XL and the cup I receive barely holds 12 ounces of fluid. It holds the hot liquid well, but we used a measuring cup for size and 12 ounces brings it within a hair of the top. I would have expected that the L may be about that size, but was hoping to use the XL to replace a near 20-year-old mug that held 24 ounces and I don’t think 12 ounces will get the job done.

I bought this for my hubby as a gift and he loves it . The quality of it surprised him, and he thought the handle might not work but he said it is a perfect grip. He said his beer stays cold and of course it is a cool, fantastic conversation starter. I love the color variation in the horn.

Awesome quality considering it’s made from natural horn!
First of all I will say that if your mug leaks, they will replace it no questions asked. I only fixed my own because I liked the horn I received and found it easier to fix the one I was sent.Excellent quality of the mug. For all the reviewers out there saying it’s plastic, it most CERTAINLY not made of plastic. It has natural imperfections unique to each horn where you can clearly see the fibrous layers of natural horn.The only place of quality that I view as lacking is in the resin seal that joins the bottom of the actual horn to the wooden base. The resin could be of better quality as it kinda “pulls away” where it becomes thin contacting the horn and can lead to pinhole leaks. I fixed this myself by using a higher grade resin I had on hand (envirotex… and yes, envirotex is safe despite their general ‘not recommended’ message in the products instructions).I’ve found caring for the horn both inside and out (most importantly the rim where the layers of horn are exposed) is a perfect job for cutting board conditioner (mix of beeswax and mineral oil). It adds a nice sheen and seals the layers of horn on the rim so liquid doesn’t cause delamination. I use Howard’s Butcher Block Conditioner and couldn’t be happier with the results. Been using my horn for months without any leaks, delaminations, or damage from my frothy beverages of choice.

Beautifully crafted, though not quite as advertised
I can’t really complain too terribly about this purchase. It IS a beautiful, well-crafted tankard and I love the colors. The only real complaint that I have is that the XL I purchased does NOT hold 24 ounces as advertised – which was why I had specifically chosen the XL. Two cans of my favorite brew are 24 ounces and this tankard, sadly, does not accomodate the full 24 ounces – not even close. I’ll have to measure later to see how much it actually DOES hold.That said, if you’re willing to accept that it may not hold exactly what it claims to hold (fairly understandable, since it IS a natural product and not factory mass-produced), it is a gorgeous addition.Update: I’ve only had the mug for about a month and I’ve noticed what seems to be delamination or fine cracking on the outside of the mug and around the rim. I don’t know if that’s because of the nature of the product or not. It’s still useable and I do use it most every day…but I thought I should mention that aspect as well.

Solid beer mug. Sturdy and gets the job done. Actually keeps the beer cold for a decent amount of time. Scratches and splits do happen, but I think it adds to the character. Overall would buy again and have as presents.

The Coolest Gift!
This is probably the coolest gift I’ve ever purchased for someone! It feels super durable—so much so my boyfriend thought it was plastic. Arrived with Cracked Rim
I read through reviews and saw a lot of complaints about cracks in their horns but saw many who were completely satisfied with what they got, so I figured I’d roll the dice. Seems I got unlucky, as there was a crack running from the top of the handle all the way around the rim of the mug. This would be a problem to drink from obviously since liquid would run into the cracks with every sip and cause further damage over time. It’s a shame too because the mug itself is beautiful and genuinely looks like it would be fun to drink out of. Other damage to note would be the epoxy it’s sealed with flaking in certain places, although it is less noticable than the large crack on the rim. For how expensive of a mug this is (got the 24 oz XL mug) I would expect there to be no damage on arrival, so I will be returning it.

They’re so well finished and smooth! Awesome cup along with the cool bottle opener and the shot glass. Highly recommend. Just be careful. Ours arrived broken so they aren’t dishwasher safe or droppable. My guess is usps dropped my boyfriends and that’s why it arrived as it did. So just be careful with it! So cool tho

These are fantastic, great quality, also you cant beat a near 100 year warranty, hopefully I shouldn’t need it but it’s awesome that theyre willing to stand by their products like that. Only complaint is that its a bit tough to get my hand in the mug to wash it, but that’s nothing that cant be solved with a long handle dish brush, definitely considering buying another one for my brother!

Beautiful horn, love it. However work needed to finish after purchase
Ok, so for this one, i dont have complaints. But i do still have a few things to mention. First off, its beautiful. And it is very very easy to hold, the one i recieved was curved very nicely. It 100% feels and looks like a real hoof. ( I know is horn) There is flaking present on the outside of my horn, just like you would see on a hoof, and has a wavy, rough texture, which is why i say that. There was zero smell. I even asked a few friends to smell it. Nothing. However. There where no care instructions included like mentioned in other reviews. But thats perfectly fine, its explained elsewhere. The mug does not have any cracks sitting here yet unused, and the interior of the mug has minor pitting, but otherwise is very smooth. The mug has a wooden bottom. And you can see it through the clear lacquer they used to finish it. Overall great buy. Ill be trying a few things to finish the horn, some suggested nail varnish and light sanding i believe. And ill update my opinion after a few days/weeks of use. As well as pictures after i finish work.So, update: the flaking on the rear is much more then i first saw, ita dry and flakey, and the lacquor is coming off in small peices there and around the rim of the mug. I stillhave not poured any ale into the mug, i will be doing so tonight and then hand washing in cold water to see how it handles that.

Nice but doesn’t hold up well
This is absolutely what we wanted! I bought this for my husbands birthday and he was seriously in love with it! The product it’s self is sturdy and still able to fit his large hand the only complaint I have is that even though we have just hand washed it the outside is cracking it hasn’t gone all the way thru to the inside but the small crack it came with is getting much larger and causing flaking across the the outside of the horn. We’ve followed the cleaning instructions and only used it a handful of times. Overall we would probably buy again since it’s a great deal.

Faster than Alehorn site
So I ordered an alehorn from the site and it took about three weeks for the item to arrive. Once I received it, I saw Amazon had alehorns and for less. I ordered and got it 2 days after. So…… yeah it was worth it.

Perfectly made and so far completely leak proof without odors!! I let water set in the mug for a little while to ensure that there was no leaking. As far as the little cup, you can just look in the inside and tell right off that it’s leak proof. I ordered 2 sets of these, one for me and the other for my cousin as a bday gift. I’m not sure if he used it yet but he absolutely loved it at first sight due to us being true Viking fans!!!

This product looks amazing! Is was really fun to drink out of. Looked and felt authentic. Sadly it barely lasted 2 months. Started leaking around the base. But then I emailed customer service and they were amazing! They simply asked for a picture showing the leak, and my order information. Pay attention to possible cracks before they get out of hand
I would easily give this a five star review, however, even after following all included instructions, some of the horn or whatever product they use to seal it, is coming undone and cracking. I including pictures of the biggest crack, the other two are too small for a picture. I’ve had this for about 7 months now and I’ve used it eleven times. It holds just over 32 oz and there’s no weird smell or anything like that. I also never leave reviews but I’m hoping someone can help me fix the cracks in it because I’d love to use it much more often but I’m afraid I’ll ruin it. Anyways, maybe I just happened to receive a defective Alehorn. But I highly recommend this product and company. The prices and quality are unbeatable and There’s nothing better than sharpening axes while drinking a nice homemade ale out of this badass horn. Also, if they included a picture of the animal the horn came from or something of the sort, that would be the greatest thing ever. To pay tribute to the animal, alive or not. In closing, if anyone knows how to fix the cracks, let me know. Thank you
